She is shocked to enter the tent and find her there, covered dripping in red and scattered with purple. Edelgard stands at the center with her clothes torn. Her breaths come heavy and short. Byleth can see the bend in her spine and the slight tremor in her hands as she wipes the blood from her face.
She hears her as she enters the tent and her posture goes rigid. Her eyes are blown wide as she turns and faces Byleth.
For a moment, the two of them just stare at one another in shock.
“Who did this to you?” Byleth’s voice cuts through the air. She has never heard her voice sound so sharp before.
“It matters not.”
“It matters to me,” she insists. “Are you alright? Let me see.”
Her feet cannot carry her forward to Edelgard fast enough. She is reaching for her before her first step even begins.
But Edelgard pulls away from her just as quickly. Her single step backwards feels like a giant chasm between them.
“Edelgard, please, give me your hand. I am your frie-" Her breath catches on the word friend. Years at one another's side and it did not seem to encompass the vast emotions Byleth felt towards her. Instead, she settles on, "I am with you. Let me see.”
Edelgard holds her own hand, clutched in front of her heart. Byleth watches as the red rubs against her cheek and sees the dirt underneath her fingernails.
“I don’t wish to stain you with this,” she finally says. “What of your clothes? Your skin?”
“Stain them then, I don’t care.”
Hesitantly, Edelgard steps towards her. Byleth can feel the solidity and shape of her fingers as they curl around hers as the familiar weight settles into her palm. Her breaths come shakey before Byleth cups her hand atop to stop the tremors and trace hidden patterns into her pale, bruised skin.
And then Edelgard's shoulders relax. She pitches forward into Byleth and she is there to catch her.
