Limbs twisted, skin stretched, bones broken. Roses, wilted.
The loss of Retecca Rose Moore and her family — it drives a chasm into their hearts, their heads, in between their tentative feet.
Icca can’t bring herself to wonder: did they lay roses down at her grave? Who did the horrid injustice of burying her darling girl beneath the dirt?
Would she still have died, if she and Caro hadn’t finished her off?
They can’t think about it, sat in the Forest shivering on the outskirts of Wonderland. They can’t think about it, years later, that chasm of grief having torn them irreparably apart. They can’t even think about how dearly they miss her, that beautiful girl, despite the rings they’d permanently scarred into their fingers for her. Just for her, and for each other, and for the love they’d all shared.
Now each time Icca runs into Caro, she is met with biting barbs, snarled thorns. Her words, all teeth.
And Icca can’t think about it, except for when she thinks about separating Caro’s head from her body.
