“I wasn’t aware you liked aquariums,” Cinder says.

Winter rolls her eyes. She doesn’t let go of Cinder’s hand, though, so it counts as a win in her book. “I’ve never been to one. I thought you might enjoy it.”

That gets her to falter, as ever. Winter does a lot of things because she thinks Cinder might enjoy them, and because she knows she’s the one soft spot Cinder has. She’d sit through anything out of obligation to participate if it made Cinder happy.

“Well, you know,” she says, and Winter laughs — laughs, like they’re alone and not standing in the middle of a crowded atrium among hundreds of people who have definitely seen her face before.

“I’ll take you for ice cream afterwards if you get bored.”

“Oh, please,” Cinder says.

Winter shoves her gently, pulls her back in by their linked hands. It makes Cinder melt a little more, which is saying something — Winter has a Thing about showing affection in public that Cinder doesn’t entirely get, not in the same way. She tends to flinch whenever Cinder touches her while they’re outside at the best of times; the fact that she held her hand from the moment they stepped out of the train carriage says a lot.

“I actually didn’t do any research, so you’re on your own.”

“You didn’t,” Cinder echoes disbelievingly.

Winter tilts her head to the side, smiling. “Well —”

Cinder shoves her this time, narrowly avoiding pushing her into a harrowed-looking teacher at the end of a long line of kids. “Oh, only the basics. Like the names and current locations of everyone in the building.”

“Just the current owner,” she says defensively. “And maybe one or two of the more relevant employees.”

“Still pestering minimum-wage workers, I see,” Cinder teases. Winter leans away from the hand that comes up to prod her face with another absurdly out-of-character laugh.

“It’s no longer my job, so I don’t bother. But I do like knowing that we’re in safe hands.”

“I bet.”
