Weiss struck, but her saber caught nothing but air.

Ruby's eyes flicked to the blade, then to Weiss, who was now several inches from her target. When had Ruby moved?

Weiss glared at her and attacked again, only to once more not even graze the Jedi.

"You're telegraphing," Ruby pointed out, an undercurrent of amusement in her voice. "You're usually better about that."

Weiss growled and lunged, and again her strike missed by inches.

"You know, for someone so determined to kill me you're doing an awfully shoddy job of it."

"Stop. Talking." Weiss words were punctuated by arcing slashes that Ruby seemed to dodge with ease.

"Do you really think all of this is worth it, Weiss?"

"Shut up!" Weiss let loose with a flurry of slashes and strikes that Ruby seemed to avoid easily, which only fueled the fire in Weiss's veins.

"Will killing every Jedi really fix the hole in your heart? Will killing me?"

"Stop talking and FIGHT, goddamnit!" Blood pounding in her ears, Weiss charged at Ruby, who sidestepped, and Weiss's momentum caused her to stumble before righting herself.

"No. I'm tired of fighting, Weiss. I'm so tired of fighting you," Ruby ran a hand through her hair, the strands falling limply to the side.

Weiss faltered at that, and took a good look at the woman who she'd once cared about more than anything else in the galaxy.

There were dark circles under her eyes, her hair was slick with grease, and a there was a deep-seated weariness to her posture that Weiss had no idea how she'd missed. Everything had taken a toll on Ruby too.

Weak, something inside Weiss whispered. You've suffered so much worse, and only gotten stronger for it. Kill her. Strike her down and you'll have power like you've never known. She is the only Jedi capable of standing in your way. Once she falls, the rest of them will be nothing. You will have your revenge.

"Please, Weiss. I don't care about playing hero, I don't care about the order's rules or platitudes or the fact that I could be exiled just for being here. I just want you back," Ruby pleaded, eyes glistening with sorrow.

"You lied to me. Why would you say that?" Ruby's eyes glistened with tears.

"Listen, Ruby, I didn't mean-" Weiss started, but Ruby cut her off.

"No, Weiss."

Ruby turned her back to her partn- ex-partner.

"It was stupid of me to think that after you actually cared about me. After all, I don't matter, right? I'm just poor little farm girl from Patch who you keep around because you find me amusing." She laughed bitterly and shook her head.

"No, we're done. I don't want to see you ever again."

With that, Ruby vanished in a cloud of rose petals, leaving Weiss standing there, mouth agape, feeling as though Ruby had just thrown a stone through her heart and shattered it.
