“For goodness’ sake, if you’re going to fall, then fall in love with me!”
That was the last thing Isadora heard before passing out completely. She woke up… who knew how much later, in Lenora’s arms on the floor. Lenora was gently rocking her back and forth, mumbling something she couldn’t understand.
“I’m awake,” she said quietly, and Lenora’s eyes immediately snapped to her. “I… I feel better now. How long was I out?”
“Long enough. How much do you remember?”
Isadora tried to think back to her last waking moments, but everything was too fuzzy to really make out. “We were coming from… Goodness, I can’t remember. Where were we coming from? The workroom? I can’t remember where we were going. I don’t remember a whole lot.”
“We were going to the kitchen for dinner,” Lenora supplied helpfully. “One second you were standing and walking, the next you folded like a lawn chair. I just barely caught you so you wouldn’t hit your head and get a concussion. You dragged both of us down.”
Isadora sat up, rubbing her temples. “Sorry about that… I guess pulling several all-nighters in a row wasn’t the smartest idea.”
“Do you, uh… Do you remember anything else from before you fainted?” she asked timidly. “Anything I said?”
She glanced at Lenora, clearly racking her brain for an answer. “Um… Not really, no… Did you say something important?”
“No, no… Nothing of the sort. I was just, uh, curious.”
Isadora furrowed her brows. Lenora wasn’t a good liar, and she was easily catching on that simple curiosity wasn’t the only reason she asked. “Did you say something important?” she repeated, more pointed.
Lenora let out an awkward little laugh before getting to her feet and extending a hand to Isadora to pull her up. “Nothing important at all. Come on, let’s have dinner. Then you can lie down and finally sleep a while.”
Isadora was still looking at her suspiciously, but she accepted the help in getting up. “Well, if you change your mind about telling me, I’m listening.”
“I heard there’s chicken for dinner,” she said, dodging the topic entirely. “It’s been so long since they’ve given us real meat. I’m excited.”
