Susato Mikotoba/Haori Murasame (The Great Ace Attorney)

219 words

Susato sits with Haori on the lawn of Yumei University. They’ve done this for years, before Haori even began her studies, back when Susato’s grandma had to watch them and call them home for lunch.

She treasures this time more than anything, but it’s taken on a somber air lately. They used to be able to talk for hours. Now, they sit in uncomfortable silence. Haori fidgets with a blade of grass.

Haori’s wedding is next week.

Susato should have seen it coming, but she’s let herself be far too naive for far too long. It’s all too real now, and she’s going to lose her best friend to a man she knows nothing about.

She’s considered it herself, marriage. She can’t bring herself to go through with it.

Haori pauses and shifts her gaze to Susato. There’s a determination in her eyes that Susato rarely sees these days.

“Ten years, a hundred years from now, someone like me will love someone like you, and there will be nobody to tear them apart.”

Susato doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t have to. She just smiles, eyes sad, and rests her head on Haori’s shoulder. Haori’s hand haltingly begins to stroke her hair.

They watch the sunset together. Susato wishes this moment would never end. In her heart, it never will.
