Ship: OC/OC
Words: 510

She wanted back on that ship.
Bella was safe and sound in her husband’s estate, laying in bed and staring out the window overlooking the bay. Rain poured, scratching against the glass only to disappear. If only she could disappear again too.
How fun it was, to be the damsel in distress, without any danger! The captain of the pirate’s fleet, a strikingly strong woman by the name of Esmeralda, had just taken the duchess for political pressure, but gods was Bella ever so excited by it all. Watching her command her crew, her marksman’s ship, and when it was all over, her reassuring voice!
“I will sooner die than let any harm come to you.” Those words, drenched in the sultry tone of the deep sea, the most romantic thing any woman ever said to her. She was sure as hell a hostage, but with such a lovely host, it was more like a vacation! No overbearing senile family, no wifely duty performance, no social stakes! Just the open sea, wind and sun nipping at the skin. Even on the stormiest of nights, she wasn’t ever alone.
So when her husband’s forces finally tracked down their route, Bella felt the tedium and dread creep back into her body. She pleaded with Esmeralda to let her stay! She’d do any work, anything at all to stay with her on this ship. Though the captain had softened around the duchess, she had already got what she needed out of this arrangement, and had to pay her side of the bargain. Bella knew this before she even asked. To remain on the ship would be actually choosing a side, and probably starting a war that they could not win. All the captain could do was kiss Bella goodbye, wishing they met again under better circumstances.
So, she went willingly with her husband. Back to the estate overlooking the ocean, the place of long cloudy days and unending troubles. There was a hole in her will that wasn’t there when she first agreed to marry him. Once upon a time their marriage was a solution to problems they couldn’t solve on their own. Bella, a woman with no interest in the dozens of suitors her father selected and this man, the only remaining branch of a certain noble family, disinterested in the whole matchmaking game. They met at some birthday celebration Bella’s father hosted, and became very fast friends. He knew she was a lesbian, and she knew he was gay, but no one else had to. Marriage was simply a contract in the eyes of the law anyway. But the eyes of the public saw an accomplished military man take half a year to mount a force against a pirate that had his wife.
As she laid in bed, watching the rain pour, a sharp yearning took over, and she wept softly into her lavender pillows. She was too distressed to notice her husband standing by the doorway.
The rain would be the perfect cover. He wanted her back on that ship.
