my armor shines
like a beacon of death

pit masters say
the first fight is the hardest

why didn't they tell me
how loud the world could be
despite being utterly alone

then—

through waves of heat
and metal shrieks

i see her

wings high and proud
with a gaze of steel
painted in light

and everything inside me
falls silent

she smiles—

like it's only us
in the pits

and only i matter
in all of kaon

so i swear
if i live through this

i’ll find her again—
if only to learn her name
