“I am your sword, and you are my life,” Lenora said, voice steady and determined, void of the usual ditzy charm. “No matter what lies ahead, know that I’m yours.” She sounded more serious than Isadora had ever heard her during their years together.

“You’re so much more than a weapon,” she said firmly. “You’re my partner.”

Lenora shook her head and took hold of her, taking her hand in her own. “You can’t look at me like that when we go out there.” Somewhere in the distance, a bomb went off, rattling the ground they stood on. “You have to internalise this. I’m nothing but your means to an end. Do you understand?”

“I didn’t let the war shape me into anything I didn’t like up until now,” Isadora said, squeezing her hand. “I won’t let it now.”

“Both of our lives depend on it.”

“Nonsense.” She raised her free hand and cupped Lenora’s cheek. “You would be so selfish as to claim me as your life and not let me return the feeling?”

“I wasn’t made to be the target of any affection. You know that.”

“I know what we’ve been through during the past five years. I know you inside and out. I know you’re more than just some weapon.”

“You’re going to get us both killed if you’re not willing to leave me behind when the situation calls for it.”

“Should I just let you get killed? And go on without you?”

Lenora nodded without any fear in her eyes. She was ready to be sacrificed, a lamb to the slaughter to her very bones. If Isadora was any less in love, she might’ve really believed that Lenora was made for this. “That’s what you must do.”

“Well, I can’t go on without you. I’d rather die alongside you.”

“Isadora…”

“No,” she cut in gently before Lenora could’ve given her another monologue about being a living, breathing weapon. Nothing but a tool. “I refuse to see you as expendable.”

Lenora was quiet for a moment before chuckling a little. Tears shone in her eyes now. “You weren’t made for the battlefield, were you? You’re so painfully human. More human than I’ll ever be. You’d throw your life away to save one of your possessions.”

“You’re only mine inasmuch as I am yours,” Isadora said, wiping a tear away as it trickled down Lenora’s cheek. “We live together, we die together. Get that through that thick skull of yours before the doors open and we have to get out there.”

“The plan outlines me dying—”

“We’re not following the plan.” Isadora smiled. “You just follow my lead.”
