Holly Bowen (robotics expert) x Katie Elliot (former professional chess player), plus a little worldbuilding because this takes place in an alternate universe Earth of my own making

Katie has been alone for a long time. She thinks of Holly, before everything fell apart. Holly loved Pokemon. Katie is more of a casual fan but she still bought the new Pokemon game, thinking of Holly. She's also always liked the pokemon Skarmory. The VGC scene wasn't very big back then but Holly always liked double battles more than singles. Katie thinks Holly would have continued on that path as VGC continued to grow. Nowadays it isn't so niche and you can find tons of VGC Youtube content analyzing battles, breaking down teams, talking about tournament runs. There's never been a better time to get into VGC.

On a whim, she looks up Holly's username and sees that she's actually livestreaming. "Getting Skarmory to #1 on the ladder" is the title of her stream. Is Holly thinking of her too, why is she using Skarmory? No, no, it's probably a coincidence. Skarmory's not that unique of a favorite pokemon, is it? Yeah, it's probably a coincidence that Holly is using Skarmory on stream.

No time for reminiscing, it was time to get back to work. Katie picks up a dagger and closes stream.

It was the start of the month when the ranked ladder reset and everyone in masterball tier is kicked out to greatball, a lot of VGC players liked to climb ranked ladder during this time especially using wacky or gimmick teams so they can say for example "I got Furret to #1 on the ladder"

Holly liked playing VGC in between her robotics projects. It was relaxing for her. Her last project, a catboy robot named Steve, somehow became sentient and befriended a chess streamer on the internet. She's not actually sure on the details but she checked the stream, the guy's chill. And sentient catboy robot isn't the craziest thing to happen in this world full of magic and superheroes. Nothing could ever be as crazy as her ex becoming famous overnight for winning a chess competition undefeated and everyone was CONVINCED that she somehow cheated using superpowers (she didn't, Holly knows she didn't). It became a whole scandal. She hasn't heard from Katie since, she practically disappeared. Katie's "superpower" if you can call it that is throwing daggers with precision. How the fuck do you cheat at chess using dagger throwing superpowers? But people were of the opinion that it doesn't matter what your superpower is, failing to disclose it before the competition is "unfair." Superpowers and superheroes have become such a polarizing issue.

This is why Holly is fighting for rights of superpowered individuals, banning them from sports for "unfair advantages" is completely arbitrary. Not to mention the invasions of privacy, people trying to find your medical records, paparazzi, stalking. Even if you're a famous superhero you deserve human rights.

She thinks of Katie as she builds a Tailwind Skarmory team for ladder. It was probably dogshit in BO3 tournaments but among BO1 ladder cheese might work. Well, it was worth a try anyway.

also I have no idea how viable Skarmory is in ANY format other than like i know people use it to set up spikes in singles but we're talking doubles here. probably not that good and Corviknight is better but just suspend your disbelief please
