Cinder descends the stairs at exactly 1 AM, and Winter is fucking hoovering again.
She gave up being sick of it a while ago. There’s nothing she can really do to stop her, save from getting the landlord to kick her out, but it’s always — god, it really is every time she goes into the kitchen, isn’t it? She’s taken to eating on campus unless she can help it, and today she very much can’t help it.
So she comes downstairs past midnight, too sick and groggy to really safely cook, and just fucking hopes Winter won’t be around again. She gets two minutes into meal prep before the vacuum starts.
Cinder is half convinced she’s developed pneumonia, so she doesn’t have the energy to protest. She just puts her headphones on and gets on with it. Genuinely she has no idea why Winter won’t leave her alone; it strikes her as an incredibly stupid decision to start cleaning the living room every time someone starts cooking, but she’s just so tired —
She’s cut out of her Cooking Dissociation when Winter backs into the kitchen with the vacuum in tow.
“Winter.”
Winter turns the hoover off instantly. “What?”
“It’s one in the morning.”
“Right,” she says. “And?”
“... Are you actually fucking joking.”
Winter makes a complicated face. “That depends on your definition of a joke. Am I bothering you?”
“Yes.”
She looks down at the vacuum. “Oh. Yeah.”
Cinder grits her teeth. “Is there a reason you’re cleaning at 1 AM?”
Silence. Winter’s head stays bowed, and after a moment she mumbles, “I wanted to check in on you.”

She helps Cinder finish cooking the meal, in the end. It turns out a little bit burned, but that doesn’t really matter.
