“See, I respect all the work you put into this, but it tastes like shit,” Winter says.
Cinder sighs, taking the plate off her. “I know.”
“It might be a textural thing?” She gestures to the aubergine. “You could try something else with the potatoes, maybe. Otherwise it’s too much.”
“This is why I give it to you first,” Cinder says, picking through the plate with her own fork. “Weiss would just throw the plate in my face.”
“Well, you did push her off a cliff that one time.”
She sighs again. “I know.”
-
The second attempt goes a lot better. Winter dutifully eats most of it, then proclaims, “That was significantly less shit,” and is rewarded with a glowing smile.
“Ready to make everyone else eat?”
“Probably not yet, but it’s a start.”
Cinder doesn’t even deflate. She takes the plate back from Winter and tries what’s left for herself, and her smile only grows wider. Winter is extraordinarily proud of her. She’s really grown since she decided she wanted to learn how to cook — she’s happier, brighter, gentler. Winter grew up with a household chef and everything, and she has autism, so she’s practically the perfect candidate to experiment on.
“I see what you mean,” Cinder says through a mouthful of potatoes, “it’s like — I don’t know. I see what you mean.”
“Try a different sauce?” Winter suggests.
“Yeah, ketchup probably does bring the quality down somewhat.”
“No, it’s more — it’s too sharp. You want something softer.”
“Right,” she says, still studying the plate. “I knew I kept you around for a reason.”

Quinn sat at the table, waiting for Lulu to bring out the dish that she had cooked. She hoped that this time, it wouldn’t give her a stomachache. She was used to eating anything in order to survive in the wilderness but Lulu was always finding new ways to create abominations.
She was sure that she was the only one so far who wouldn’t pass out or die from Lulu’s cooking. Lulu wasn’t bad at cooking but she was invested in experimentation like the scientist that she was. She thought of the unholiest of food combinations.
Quinn heard Lulu’s footsteps approaching. “Behold, my newest creation!” Lulu placed the dish down on the table.
“Hey.” Quinn tried to keep a straight face. “Why is it moving?” It was hard to tell what exactly the dish was but among the green and purple goo, there was a large chunk of a tentacle that was still squirming.
Lulu smacked it with a spatula. “Oh, don’t worry, it’s definitely dead! I cooked a special type of monster whose corpse still moves for days afterwards.”
Right… Quinn stabbed the tentacle with a fork and bit it, pulling away a chunk. She was used to hunting and eating monsters but she had never eaten one that was still moving. It sure was… interesting to feel parts of it still wiggling in her mouth. She swallowed it down as quickly as she could without choking.
“So how is it?” Lulu asked, pulling a notepad and pen out of her pocket.
“Kind of chewy but not too bad. The wiggling is weird but the food is filling.” Lulu jotted down Quinn’s commentary. Quinn chuckled at the sight of her so into this. She herself didn’t have an intense passion for anything in particular so she admired Lulu’s endless curiosity to delve deep into monsters.
She ate a spoonful of the goo. It wasn’t pleasant but she continued eating. Quinn doubted anyone else would want to risk their stomachs for this. Not that awkward first prince or her twin. It was a task that she was always up for, though. Lulu’s smile and the sparkle in her eyes were good enough rewards.
