“I do not understand,” Penny says, a little faintly, “why is the paper made out of rice?”

Ruby hops up onto the couch, swinging her legs over Penny’s lap. “It’s — well, I don’t actually know how they make it. But you said you were craving paper, so.” She gestures to the paper, which is now trembling in Penny’s grip. “I got you some you could eat.”

Penny’s eyes turn bright with tears. “Thank you, Ruby,” she says, eyes wide and earnest, “I had no idea they made alternatives like this.”

“Not everything is made of rice, but we can probably get you stuff to replace the urge to eat, y’know, mud.”

“I only ate mud the once,” she says around a mouthful of paper.
