Noelle stood outside her apartment unit’s door. She put the key in the lock and turned it. With a click, she opened the door… to find Akarsha with one knee on the ground and holding a ring pop out to her.
“This again?!” Noelle shouted. She remembered Akarsha fake-proposing to her when they were in high school as a distraction so that Min-seo could finish icing her birthday cake.
Back to the present though. Noelle had no idea why her girlfriend was pulling the proposal stunt again. It’s not like Akarsha needed to create a distraction for anything. There was nothing special about today.
“Noelle, my dearest Frenchman and Skunky, will you make me the happiest woman by marrying me?!” Akarsha grinned at her.
Noelle slapped a palm to her forehead. The proposal got even longer than last time! “Why are you doing this?” she asked.
“GASP, are you dissatisfied, Skunky?” Did Akarsha really say the word “gasp” out loud? Akarsha shoved a hand into her hoodie pocket and pulled something out. It was another ring pop…
She opened it up, cramming the wrapper back into her pocket. “I see what the problem was and I aim to resolve it. Now we both have engagement rings. You get the green one and I get the pink one.”
Akarsha slipped the pink one on her ring finger and grabbed Noelle’s hand. The green ring pop was already on Noelle’s ring finger before she pulled back. “You didn’t even let me answer?” she said incredulously. She was trying hard not to laugh.
Akarsha shrugged. “You didn’t say no. Just like last time. So in actuality, I’m just finalizing our engagement now.” She remembered the silly gag from high school too. She then pulled off her ring and thrust it to Noelle. “Now put the ring on my finger.”
Noelle raised an eyebrow. “You put it on already and now you’re taking it off just for me to put it on again?”
“My hands were occupied with putting yours on. I can’t hold two rings at once. What if they both fell? Those are our precious engagement rings that I paid $5 for!”
“If they’re so precious, why are they edible candy?” Although the truth was that Noelle had never eaten a ring pop before. Those weren’t the types of snacks that her family got.
“That’s the best part about it. Why get rocks for engagement rings when you can get pretty, shiny, and yummy rings?” Akarsha licked her pink ring pop.
Noelle was speechless at this court jester so she just grabbed the ring and placed it onto Akarsha’s left ring finger. “Not very romantic to just lick your own engagement ring.”
“Who cares, future wife. It’s my ring so I can do whatever I want to it.”
How strange it was that Noelle felt a little warm at that title.
