SHIP: Mushka x Laika the Space Dog from the 1960s space race ig

Mushka knows that scent immediately. When the trainer sets her down, she practically flies towards its source, barking happily "Laika, Laika!"

The other dog's tail is wagging enthusiastically. They circle each other, taking in the other's scent. Mushka relishes the opportunity to press her nose to Laika's fur. She has the tang of metal to her, moreso than usual. Mushka ignores this, glad to feel the familiar curly coat against her snout. She doesn't get long to enjoy it, though, before Laika playfully nips Mushka's ear and runs off.

Mushka chases after, annoyed at the break-off of intimacy but too caught up in the elation of the chase to care for long. This too doesn't last long. Laika is a bit slow, and she gives up too easily. At least she has the decency to show her belly and surrender.

"Enough. They had me inside for too long," says Laika, tongue lolling.

"Blegh," Mushka sits down next to her. "What were they training you to do now?"

"Eat and drink from the tubes," Laika rolls over onto her stomach, ears perked. "I'm very good at it now. They said I'm a good girl!"

"Good girl! Good girl!" yelps Mushka. "Do you think I'm a good girl?"

"Just because you can run faster, bark louder, and bite harder than anyone else?" Laika says as she sits up. "No, never."

Mushka stands up. She growls. "You take that back."

"You're the best girl!"

Mushka growls again, but this time playfully. "What was that? I couldn't hear you."

"Good girl! Best girl!"

She tackles Laika, pinning her to the ground. It's not gentle, but neither considers it an act of aggression. They were both stray dogs not too long ago, used to fighting for every shelter and scrap of food they came by. All too well, they know what it's like to face a real attack. This isn't it.

"Say it again."

"You're the best girl." Mushka lets Laika go. "But I'm still better."

Before Mushka can retaliate with another play-attack, the trainers have returned. They have food and water!

One of them stops to pet Laika. Mushka whines, annoyed at the lack of attention, and the trainer gives her a brief pat. Everyone seems focused on Laika, though. They're saying words to her, long strings of not-trained words. While Laika gladly basks in their attention, Mushka suddenly gets a sinking feeling as she hears something behind those words. A sadness.

When the trainers finally set down the food and water bowls, most of them stick around. Strange, usually they like to shuffle off to do funny things with their papers and their metal boxes. That sinking feeling of Mushka's doesn't go away.

She nudges Laika while the other dog drinks. "Hey. Do you feel something's wrong?"

Laika looks up from the bowl smugly at her. "It's not wrong that I was a good girl today and not you."

"No, it's not that, it's just..." Mushka can't describe it, so she shakes her head. "Never mind."

The trainers are generous with their pets and their playing tonight. It's easy to be distracted from that feeling Mushka has, even if it never goes away. But eventually, she gets tired of all their hands and their noise. So Mushka slips away, wandering to the yard to get some fresh air.

It's only slightly chilly tonight. The breeze smells of pine sap and snow, and the stars are out. In the city, they were usually smothered under a blanket of clouds and fog. Usually, Mushka doesn't care to take in the view. For some reason, however, tonight feels different.

"What are you looking at?" Laika appears by her side, having somehow slipped away from the trainers. It won't be long before they come as well, Mushka knows, ending this private moment between them. She wishes it would never end. She wants to feel Laika's fur on her own, and smell the breeze, and take in the stars forever.

"Nothing," she huffs. "Just... the sky. You now, I suppose."

The stars are shining in Laika's eyes. "What do you think is up there?"

"In the sky?" Mushka only steals glances at Laika, doesn't stare. "I don't know, nobody's ever been. I suppose stars, of course. And the moon."

"Imagine what it would be like to play in the stars," Laika's tail thumps happily against the ground. "Do you think there's space to run up there?"

"Space to run?" Mushka takes in a deep breath, savoring the moment as she leans against her fellow stray. "Yes. I think there's all the space you want to run among the stars."

Laika leans back on Mushka, and their scents blend together with the fresh breeze as they savor the sights above.
