It’s a little draining, to be honest, but she’s used to it. She just — misses the sun, misses the feeling of being close to someone. Even without meeting her soulmate, she knows they’re out there.
Today, sick of this and worn down from days of preparing for exams, she clears her entire schedule just to see the sunset. This means climbing up onto the roof of her dormitory building, pulling her knees up to her chest, and breathing in the silence. She’s always liked being alone.

Awash in blue, Cinder follows the sound of her heartbeat all the way up onto the Mantle-Atlas skyrail, onto the academy grounds, up to the student quarters. A few people give her weird looks; she pays them no mind. She just — she needs to know. She’s been alone for so long. She needs to know. There’s an ache in her chest and it;s pulling her onwards, a glowing emptiness, the sense that someone is there —
She keeps to the shadows. The student quarters are something of a surveillance state, but she’s used to hiding from cameras by now. And when she hits the edge of a building the closest to the edge of the city, she doesn’t hesitate to climb.

“It’s you,” the girl says.
Winter looks up. She didn’t even know there was someone on the roof until now, but she can’t even bring herself to be afraid. “What is?”
The girl looks at her, eyes wide, and Winter’s world explodes into colour.
