Summary: is this guy bothering you queen?
From the moment she opened her eyes, Byleth had been told to keep her cloak guarded. Her mother and father both warned her. There wasn't a day that went by where they hadn't wagged their finger at her and said, "Keep your pelt close at all times. Never let a human find it."
Byleth had always protested back. She would argue that Jeralt was a human man. He was her father and the amount of times she had seen him hand her mother her pelt was well over a million.
"It's different when you are married to the human," Sitri whispered to her before tucking her into bed. "Your father is a good man. They are hard to find."
"You found one."
"I did."
"How will I know?"
Her mother smiled. "You will know when they hand you your freedom instead of trying to take it. But they are so few and far between."
And so Byleth had listened.
She took their words of warning to heart. Her cloak remained tightly wrapped around her shoulders at all times. She never left it in the open. She seldom even his it. It hardly ever left her.
There had been a few close calls. Run ins with humans who chased after her, but she slipped through their fingers and dodged their advances. Each time was a clear reminder of what her parents had said.
Byleth needed to remain vigilant.
"Hey," a man called to her as she left the tavern. "Where're you going with that fur pelt? It's the middle of summer…"
Byleth kept walking, pretending not to have heard. She had only wanted bait for her line and she had gotten what she came for.
"Ain't you hot with it on?" He slurred and stumbled after her. "C'mon… Let me help you with that."
Byleth shook her head and attempted to maneuver around him. But the man would not give her the chance.
He snuck up behind her and reached to pull it from her shoulders. Byleth felt her grip tighten on her cloak, but the man was stronger than she was expecting. To her horror, it began to slip through her fingers and fall to the floor.
"You'd look much better with it off. It's too hot for a pretty girl like you to-"
Crack.
The man's head spun quickly as a fist connected with his jaw. He stumbled back, clutching at his face.
"Can't you take a hint?" a young woman asked, with fire burning in her lavender eyes. "She's doing just fine without any help."
Byleth watched as the man scrambles out of the tavern, howling in pain. When she turned to retrieve her cloak, the young woman was already standing there and handing it back to her.
"Are you alright?" she asked as she pressed it carefully back into her hands.
"I'm okay," Byleth said, stunned. She quickly moved to wrap herself back into her cloak.
"The nerve of some people, honestly…" She held out a hand for Byleth to shake. "I'm sorry about that. My name is Edelgard, by the way."
"Byleth."
Edelgard's hand felt warm in hers. Byleth felt her heart thrum in her chest at the contact. She suddenly never wanted to let go.
"Byleth, that's a lovely name," Edelgard said. She smiled and it suddenly felt warmer than an August day.
A good man.
"I've seen you come here a few times. You always buy bait and leave."
Few and far between.
"I've always wanted to talk with you, but never had the chance. I'm sorry the circumstances couldn't be better."
It looked as though Byleth had found one.
"Come home with me," she blurted.
"P-pardon?"
"Come home with me and meet my parents. We need to get married."
