Summary: The confidence granted by wearing a mask.

“I know it is you,” Byleth said. “A mask could never hide you from me.”

How silly this was. A masquerade ball. As if she wouldn’t recognize anyone behind a flimsy piece of fabric covering their eyes.

Edelgard had the nerve to give her a coy smile. “I have no idea what you could be referring to.”

Her arms tighten around Byleth’s waist as she spun her across the dance floor for the whole room to see. It made her sweat under her collar.

Byleth could recognize her. She would know Edelgard despite anything. But she could only hope that no one else did. Otherwise, it would be clear that she was dancing with the heir to the most prominent rival to her own family.

Rhea would have her neck for this.

“You’re thinking too much,” Edelgard whispered into her ear and shook her from her thoughts.

“As are you,” Byleth said back.

“Darling, you are all that I think about.”

Who was this girl? The power of a porcelain mask had clearly gone to her head.

“Perhaps you should get some new hobbies. I hear painting is very relaxing.”

Edelgard smiled at her. Of course, Byleth already knew of the things she had painted. They had met under the guise of nightfall and tea while Edelgard had taken her brushes to the easel. The next day a portrait of herself was on her doorstep with a hand written note.

It was still hung proudly over Byleth’s desk.

Their feet carried them through spins and twirls as they swept each other around the room, in silent battle over who would lead this dance. Surprisingly, Edelgard never once stepped on her toes. Byleth had to begrudgingly appreciate that.

She was the perfect partner.

For dancing, Byleth chided herself. The perfect dance partner.

The music came to a crescendo and Byleth could feel every eye in the room on them. The tension in the air felt palpable.

On the downbeat, Byleth guided her masked partner into a dip. She leaned in close, whispering, “Everyone is staring.”

“Why don’t we give them something to really look at then?”

Altered Carbon sort of basic setting premise: human consciousness is stored in a disc at the base of the brain and bodies can be replaced at will and as needed as long as the disc is intact.
Give me a yuri that deals with the delicate world of love where bodies are transigent and frequently replaced, often with little care for what you'd prefer.
