filling my own prompt with my own pet tiny fandom for Maximum Self-Indulgence

Unichord hadn't actually discussed their sleeping arrangements for the trip to New York when they were planning it - the human members of the group had left it all to Lumina, figuring that a girl who literally lived on the internet could find a better hotel than any of them could.

Kokoa was regretting that decision a little bit as she followed Michiru into the one room reserved for the unit. On paper Lumina had made a decision that made perfect sense for their budget and their party. She had reserved them a room with two double beds, perfect for a three-person group like Michiru, Hayate, and Kokoa.

All it meant was that two of them had to share a bed, that was all.

"Waaaaaaaaaah!" Michiru exclaimed in her usual way as she dashed forward, jumping onto the bed closest to the window and sprawling all her limbs out. "Sweet, soft, bouncy beds at last! Beds I miiiiiiissed you on the plane! Never again shall Kaibara Michiru sleep on a stiff airplane seat, never!!!"

Kokoa could have retorted that Michiru would have to sleep on the way back home again, but she didn't. She wheeled her suitcase off to the side with a sigh, then looked at Hayate expectantly.

"Looks like we're sharing," Hayate said, with a vacant voice but a smile on her face that said she knew exactly how Kokoa felt about it.

Kokoa flushed, unable to help the way her heart raced at the immediate, unquestioning invitation, "I mean, I'm certainly not sharing with Michiru."

"Hey, what's that supposed to —"

Lumina chose to ping Michiru's phone at that moment, and after a moment's scramble Kokoa and Hayate could hear her over speaker.

"Remember girls, you gotta get right to bed. No time to think, just sleep so we can get right to it tomorrow!"

"You're so right Sensei," Michiru nodded fake-thoughtfully along, "which is why I will not let Kokoa trick me into giving up my bed all to myself!"

She pointed dramatically at the two girls still lingering in the doorway, "As a two person DJ unit you two are accustomed to sharing, and thus won't object to it now!"

"I..." Kokoa couldn't help but be a little lost at Michiru's swift changes in attitude. "I wasn't going to."

"Neither was I." Hayate chimed in.

"Perfect, another great plan from me," Michiru raised her finger to her chin, framing her signature smug smile. "I'm going to get changed first also!"

Before Kokoa could even move from the doorway Michiru dashed into the bathroom, pajamas already in her hands, and once she shut the door Kokoa and Hayate exchanged a look.

Hayate smiled again, a 'what can you do about Michiru' smile this time, and said: "We should get ready too."

Kokoa nodded in response, and the two set about the beginnings of their nighttime routines.

Kokoa had barely got her hair out of its pigtails by the time Michiru burst out of the bathroom, sporting worn Pretty Cure pajamas whose long sleeves didn't reach her wrist anymore. Hayate went in and came out next, reappearing in a too big t-shirt that used to belong to her dad and a pair of cozy-looking plaid pajama pants.

Kokoa was starting to feel nervous about the bed sharing again when it was her turn to go change, contemplating it as she brushed her teeth and washed her makeup off. She and Hayate had slept over at each other's houses many a time by now, but there was always a spare futon for one of them. This was something entirely new, and it was only the fatigue from hours of travel that kept Kokoa from fretting about it.

She left the bathroom to her unitmates both in their beds, though Michiru was still fidgeting in hers. Kokoa ignored her and turned to Hayate, who was sitting up and clearly waiting for her.

"Once you're in it's lights out," Hayate informed her, smiling as calmly as ever.

In that moment, Kokoa aredently wished Michiru wasn't in the room. She wanted to talk about sharing a bed, she wanted to hear Hayate charm her into it, and she wanted to get in there and cuddle right away.

Unfortunately, Michiru (and Lumina, liable to pop up on their phones at any minute) didn't know about the two of them, so as Kokoa slipped under the covers next to Hayate she realized it wouldn't be that big of a step for them two of them after all. All they could do was lie on the same bed, separately, like the ordinary friends they were pretending to be.

Kokoa couldn't help a moment of disappointment as Hayate leaned over and turned out the bedside lamps. Michiru wished them good night, Hayate wished it back, and Kokoa mumbled her own good night to their unitmate, pulling the covers all the way up to her neck.

Then, as she lay there, Kokoa felt Hayate grab her sleeve.

She startled, silently, and as she looked over and her eyes adjusted to the darkness Kokoa saw that Hayate was clearly lying on her side, clearly looking at her.

Kokoa rolled over to face Hayate too, and as Hayate continued to reach around Kokoa realized, through the way she kept aiming lower and missing, that Hayate was trying to grab her hand.

Kokoa grabbed back, and felt Hayate squeeze her hand. Kokoa felt warmth that had nothing to do with the covers, and squeezed Hayate's hand back.

"Good night, Kokoa," Hayate whispered, and even as she knew they were supposed to calm down Kokoa felt a bit of a thrill knowing it was just for her.

"Good night Hayate," she whispered back, and even in a room with others, even on a completely different continent, and even with the thought of Unichord's biggest stage yet hanging over her, Kokoa was able to fall asleep soundly with just Hayate's hand in hers.
