Joy adjusts her camera, then strums her guitar. Once, twice. Tweak the strings. She’s been posting weekly covers for the past three months, but this is the first time her video serves a greater purpose. She clears her throat, reviewing the speech she spent hours practicing and perfecting.
This cover is dedicated to my best friend. Because you’ve helped me through so much, and this song always makes me think of you.
There’s no need to drop a name. Thia will know, and everyone else can speculate as much as they want. Because Joy might post cover videos for thousands of people to watch, but she really only sings for one person apart from herself. There is only one other person whose approval she truly longs for.
She wipes her sweating palms on her jeans. This isn’t a love confession, but it could be. She’s been in love with Thia for longer than she’d like to admit, and at its core, the song she’s about to play is, in fact, a love song.
Her eyes slip shut as she inhales, then lets her breath out slowly.
She opens her eyes and beams at the camera like she’s pulling all of the sun’s light into her smile. Thia had told her, once, that the brightness of her smile rivals a cloudless summer day.

Thia blinks. Joy’s video offers no extra explanation; she simply transitions straight into playing the song. But there’s no one else she could be talking about, as far as Thia is aware. No one else has been with Joy through as much as Thia has. No one else’s soul has been linked to hers from the moment they were born.
No one else would simply know they are Joy’s best friend.
This week’s cover is a love song, but Thia tells herself that doesn’t mean anything. It could be interpreted as platonic, really—above all, it’s about a strong bond between two people, and about being there for someone you love and them being there for you in return. It doesn’t have to mean anything. Even if Thia wishes it did. Even if Thia wants to do something incredibly stupid like jump on the first plane to New York just to tell Joy I love you too.
She won’t, though. She values her friendship with Joy too much to risk ruining it. Even if she knows Iz and Kelly will tell her to just go for it— She can’t.
She can’t lose Joy.
Beyond the ramifications the world may face, Thia is selfish. She wants to keep Joy in her life for herself. It doesn’t matter what the world and Time want from them; Thia loves Joy enough to disregard everything else if it means they can be friends. If it means they can meet up in the summers—they can get ice cream from the drive-in by the park, they can walk around the county fair, they can drive with no destination, music blasting, Joy singing along.
Joy has a beautiful voice. It’s no wonder her most recent video already has well over a hundred likes, despite being posted a mere hour and a half ago. Joy has a beautiful voice and a sunshine-y personality and the brightest smile Thia has ever seen, and Thia loves her.
She watches the video six times through before liking it and leaving a comment. She deletes and rewrites it over and over before finally settling on a simple: thank you <3
It’s the closest she can get to I love you.
Maybe Joy will be able to hear the truth. It’s a dangerous hope, but Thia has always been a dreamer.
