The endless battlefield really is endless, and Winter gets sick of it after a day. She’s discovered that if she tries to skip ‘training’, someone high up and significantly deader than her sends a Valkyrie after her, so she’s begun experimenting — it’s been a long time since Cinder last came to check in on her, and she misses her.

(She thinks she could even convince her to stay over if she tried, which would mean — a lot. Cinder’s presence is comforting, especially so in death. Sometimes Winter catches sight of her ferrying bodies off the battlefield and earns herself a brief smile, the back half of a wave.)

Today, she volunteers for cleanup duty.

People on cleanup duty usually wind up getting shot at anyway, she reasons. It’s not that much of a risk, it technically qualifies as training, and she thinks she’s got Cinder’s schedule down.

She wants to see her again. She doesn’t want to fight; she’s fought all of her life, and it took dying to discover that she may not have ever needed to in the first place. She thinks part of her belongs with Cinder; she thinks that maybe in another life they might have —

Winter steps out onto the battlefield and walks directly into her.

“Oh, there you are,” Cinder says. A stray javelin shoots past her left ear and she plucks it out of the air neatly, sets it down on the floor before Winter can even think about reeling backwards. The last dregs of the day’s combat are dwindling into nothing around them; soon they’ll have an actual job to do.

It doesn’t matter. She’s found her.

“Here I am,” Winter says dizzily. “I was looking for you.”

“Missed me, huh?” Cinder grins. “Well, I missed you. Hey, are you free after this?”

“I was hoping you might be.”

She glances up at the endless sky, a different kind of smile quirking at her lips. “I’ve been meaning to come find you. You know how hard it is to find a dead guy in this place?”

“Do you know how hard it is to find a Valkyrie in this place?”

“Point taken.” Cinder offers her arm. “I’m free for forever, practically.”

“Lost a bet?”

Cinder raises an eyebrow at her over the back of the seat. There’s a mostly untouched bucket of popcorn in her lap. Her phone is propped up in the cup holder, clearly prepared to record the film. Winter doesn’t have it in her to be jealous. If she was more willing to come today, she’d have bought something. “Why, did you?”

Winter makes a face. “This was my punishment.”

Cinder laughs. The cinema is completely empty aside from them; the film itself hasn’t started yet, so there’s no reason to be quiet and no one to tell them to stop. “Wow. I don’t know whether to feel bad for you or not. I’m here because I want to be.”

“Really?”

She grimaces. “No. My friends didn’t want to come, so I’m —” she gestures to her phone. “I’m being a good friend.”

She must look particularly pitying, because Cinder laughs again and hops up over the back of her seat to sit next to Winter. She jolts back, but doesn’t make an effort to dissuade her. They’re both in the cinema to watch Morbius, for G-d’s sake. She does, though, flinch a little at the sudden proximity — Cinder lands perfectly in front of her and leans into Winter’s space, close enough for Winter to see the exact amber of her eyes. “Want to make out instead?”

Takina waits thirty-three hours before she gets sick of dodging nurses. It takes very little effort to locate Chisato’s room; she flags down a harried-looking older man, badgers Kurumi until she complies, and stakes out outside Chisato’s ward instead of wandering the halls and losing sleep.

She thinks someone must have spoken to the staff, because no one bothers to move her. There’s a little seat a few metres down the hall that she slumps into, and the Lycoris badge on the shoulder of her uniform prevents people from asking her any questions. It’s not perfect — perfect would involve being allowed into Chisato’s room, but she’d rather not push her luck — but it’s something.

If she focuses, Takina swears she can hear her last words to her before they took her to the hospital pinging around the back of her skull. It gets stronger the closer she gets to the door and the girl in the bed behind it — Swear you’ll be here when I come back? Promise me?, a thread tugging her ever onwards. After a power nap, she gets up and starts pacing past Chisato’s door, just to be close to her.

She doesn’t get to be close to her for a while.

The more she thinks about it, the more Takina gets the impression that Chisato didn’t exactly know where she was going when they pulled the two of them out of the tower. They were both half-conscious at the time, bleeding and tired. Would she hold her to a promise she might not remember?

(It doesn’t matter, Takina decides; she’ll hold herself to it. She took Chisato’s hand in that ambulance and said, I promise you, and that has to count for something.)

In the days following the fallout of the attack, Chisato vanishes. There’s a brief panic, and then Mika and Kurumi announce that they were keeping an eye on plane departures anyway, so the panic morphs into exasperation. She snuck out of the hospital, one assumes, even though Chisato has only ever been capable of being subtle when someone puts a gun in her hand.

“Well, I’ll send you off to get her when we pin her down,” Mika says one morning, and all of them look at Takina at once. She blinks over at him.

“Me?”

He shrugs. “She’s in love with you. Who else would it be?”
