Esha remembers her second engagement much better than her first one. She was barely nine the first time around, so she doesn't think she can be faulted for that. Most of the talks were conducted behind closed doors, and she was only directly asked for her opinion at the very end, although plenty of relatives and courtiers did prod her and Arketh in a roundabout way. As much as she cherishes those memories, time has worn them out. Revisiting them feels like a pleasant dream nowadays.

She remembers every detail of her second engagement vividly. Two brothers in the grave, and Esha's family was expected to dine with the man responsible. The emperor Kozmorath had strutted into the mahal as if it were his, commenting on how quaint the architecture was and the slowness of the servants. He'd dismissed their customs as barbarous, talking lightheartedly as he prodded as the very foundations of their kingdom. Everyone knew that he was trying to get a reaction from them. Often, he succeeded.

The palace staff had suddenly started working in pairs for his visit. Esha noticed quickly. So did her family. They'd all clustered around her whenever Kozmorath entered the room, made sure he was never alone with her. That had been their greatest mistake.

"I have been thinking," the emperor announced towards the end of their meal. "This war and our new alliance has had me pondering the important things in life. Together, our nations will find prosperity and glory, of course. But what is that without a line of succession?"

The room went dead silent.

"Your younger daughter is intelligent, charming, not particularly hard on the eyes," he continued, grinning. "I daresay it won't take her long to unlearn her blasphemous ways. The war just ended. This seems like a logical path forward to peace, would it not?"

Beneath the table, Esha saw her father clenching his fists. She thought of her brothers' corpses rotting somewhere in the Wasteland, the blood of her nation watering the soil, and agreed before anyone could protest. A glint in his eyes, Kozmorath drank a hearty toast to the two of them.

Now, her husband only drinks his wine in small sips. He grimaces afterwards far less than he used to. Sometimes under his breath he mutters about something called sake.

Esha watches her husband eating, notes how he avoids using people's names. She's heard that poison can do strange things to the mind, seen it with one of her cousins. This feels different.

The emperor asks her what her favorite food was the next evening. Esha says something with a lot of milk, knowing the general tiefling intolerance for the substance. The day after, he managed to make it through a whole dish before suddenly disappearing to the privy.

Everyone else at the dinner table pretends not to stare at the empty seat beside Esha. She thinks about how tumultuous her life has been, for her to have married a different man than either one she was engaged to.

Ruby hops up onto the couch, swinging her legs over Penny’s lap. “It’s — well, I don’t actually know how they make it. But you said you were craving paper, so.” She gestures to the paper, which is now trembling in Penny’s grip. “I got you some you could eat.”

Penny’s eyes turn bright with tears. “Thank you, Ruby,” she says, eyes wide and earnest, “I had no idea they made alternatives like this.”

“Not everything is made of rice, but we can probably get you stuff to replace the urge to eat, y’know, mud.”

“I only ate mud the once,” she says around a mouthful of paper.

Up late studying and your roommate brings you coffee. Bonus points if you and your roommate don't get along

It's the time of night where Valen is reflecting on the hypocrisy of medical school, the purpose of which is to produce doctors in order to help with people's health, depending on medical students ruining their own health to get through it.

Valen's eyes hurt from looking at a screen so long, she knows she'll be in pain the instant she moves from having been sat at the table for hours, and the fuzziness of her mind at present is definitely the product of studying so late into the night. Early into the morning? Valen has not looked at the time in a while, she put a sticky note over that portion of her laptop screen to block it, but it is thoroughly dark outside and that's all she cares to know.

The exact moment that Valen is tempted to look at the time, just to know, even though she's nowhere near done studying and will be awake for hours yet, that's when Juniper chooses to interrupt her.

"Hey genius, look up for a second."

Given the snide way Juniper always says "genius" Valen is tempted to ignore her, but that usually goes even worse than acknowledging Juniper does so Valen looks up from her laptop screen as asked.

Juniper hasn't taken off her (way too dramatic for uni) winter cloak yet, and she has a bit of snow dusting its black shoulders. Valen wants to take a dig, to goad her roommate for the millionth time about her ridiculous fashion sense, but before Valen can say anything at all Juniper shoves something in Valen's face.

A paper coffee cup, sleeve and all, that's still radiating warmth.

"This is for you. Take it so I can go take my cloak off before I change my mind."

In her late night stupor Valen takes a second to react, but she does take the cup in her hands after a beat, setting it down on the table beside her laptop, taking off the lid so she can check what's inside.

Juniper's foisted her failed experiments off on Valen in inconspicuous cups before, but for the first time that Valen's seen this drink is exactly what you'd expect from its appearance: a nice, warm, fragrant cup of coffee.

Valen looks up to see Juniper herself in the doorway, taking off her cloak just like she said she would.

"This is coffee?" Valen asks.

Juniper huffs in response, as she sits down to undo her (impractically heeled for the weather) boots, "Duh. You can smell it, can't you?"

"Just coffee, no add-ins or anything?"

"I know you take it black, 'cause you're boring," Juniper says, as if a little sugar and cream was the cause of Valen's concern. "Use one of my syrups if you're not happy with it."

With her mind so addled by the time and the circumstances, Valen doesn't even think further and asks the next question that comes to mind:

"You want me to be happy with this coffee?"

That one gets Juniper to stop undoing her scarf, the final step of her going from outdoors to indoors, and glare at Valen.

"Yes, I want you to like the coffee. I'm not a monster, you know. I was on my way home, grabbing a snack, and remembered my genius roommate was cramming tonight, so I got her some coffee. You're welcome."

Given Juniper's regular level of consideration towards Valen, just that sentiment has Valen wondering if Juniper drank one of her potions herself and became a much nicer person since Valen last saw her.

Though when Juniper walks over, instead of further somewhat-warm sentiments, she grabs Valen's head, turns her face towards her laptop, and tilts Valen's head down so she's looking at her study material again.

"There, now get back to work and stop gaping at me. You have to study so you don't drop out and leave me paying the whole rent on this place."

That's more of a Juniper reason to help Valen with her late night, but with 'Juniper did a nice thing for me' fully established, Valen can't help but look up at her and smile.

"Glad you want me to stick around, Juniper."

"Not what I said," she insists, spinning (too dramatically) towards her room.

"Thanks for the coffee."

"I already said you're welcome!"

With that Juniper properly disappeared into her room, and Valen let out a little sigh as she turned back to her work. It seems that even when she's being kind of nice, Juniper can't help but prickle and poke at Valen.

Instead of contemplating what that means though, Valen turns back to her laptop, grabs the coffee in both hands to keep them warm, and lets herself get back to work with a lighter heart than she had before Juniper got back.

“What do Grimm… eat?”

Cinder shrugs, shovelling more river water into her mouth. The bone spires on her shoulders ripple in the light. “I don’t know,” she says off Winter’s concerned look, “I just eat whatever.”

“...Right,” Winter says.

“Can’t have meat that’s been dead for too long, though,” she adds. “Like, more than 24 hours.”

“And that’s what we’re… doing,” Winter finishes. She feels sort of out of place here, lodged inbetween two worlds. Her supervisors would kill her if they knew she was doing this; Cinder — well, she wouldn’t kill her, but she would get very mopey about it if Winter didn’t help her.

“Yeah.” Cinder stands up, unfurling. In Grimm form like this, she’s two feet taller than Winter, rippling with spears of bone and black liquid. To be honest, it’s kind of hot. “Deer are good, I like deer.”

The first time they met, Cinder was trying to pack an entire deer flank into her fridge. “I gathered,” Winter says.

It’s fairly difficult for Suletta to get out of bed by herself these days, a symptom of the colder weather on Earth. Even harder to manage it without waking Miorine up. She circumvents all of these issues by bribing Eri into remotely piloting her wheelchair into the bedroom, wriggling out of Miorine’s arms, and rolling sideways out of the bed.

Slight miscalculation: the noise Suletta makes when she smacks her head against the side of her chair’s frame makes Miorine go, “Shushhhhhhhh,” in her sleep. Suletta freezes halfway to pulling herself up — she really should have asked Eri to move the chair closer — and watches carefully until she rolls over.

Once she’s in the kitchen, it becomes a lot easier. Miorine is a very heavy sleeper, and has long since grown immune to the sound of people banging about in the kitchen. Living with Earth House for a year or two will do that to you, Suletta supposes.

Mom is out for the day, both to give them space and to get her own chair upgraded, so she has free reign. This also means she can’t ask her to help with food prep, and Eri certainly won’t do it, so Suletta endeavours to enter Focus Mode for the remainder of the morning. Surely that won’t backfire.

On the morning that marks her first full year of being married to Suletta, Miorine wakes up to the announcement that, “I didn’t even set off the smoke alarm!”

“Mmgh,” she says, rolling over, “was that ever a danger?”

“You never know,” Suletta says brightly. Miorine opens her eyes and finds her sitting by her side of the bed, breakfast tray in her lap. Her heart just about bursts. “Happy anniversary!”

“God,” she says, convinced she’s about to cry. “You made breakfast for me?”

“Of course!”

toby is a kid winter kind of 'took under her wing' as much as you can when you're actively losing your mind. in my heart i think winter is very good with kids but only if you want your beautiful baby to be proficient at swordfighting. toby is proficient at swordfighting

Cinder rolls out of bed at 5 AM, shoots a message to Toby’s guardian, and goes downstairs to start making breakfast.

Winter actually managed to take her medication last night — something about wanting to get a healthy amount of sleep for once — so she figures she’s got about four hours to figure something out. That’s enough time for a grocery run, picking Toby up on the way back, and actually cooking. That’s fine. That’s manageable.

She manages to pull off the grocery run in record time, and Toby is waiting on the front steps of his apartment block when she gets back down to her street. He turned 12 last week, but he’s still pretty much the same kid who used to follow Winter around Vacuo like a lost puppy — bright, enthusiastic, gentle. She doesn’t really know how to interact with kids, but Toby seems to enjoy her presence, so.

They manage to get inside the house quietly. Cinder gets Toby started on preparing the food and slips back into the bedroom to check on Winter. Still fast asleep, clinging to the pillow Cinder put in bed next to her to simulate the feeling of her presence. Cute, she thinks, and turns off all the fire alarms on her way back to the kitchen just in case.

Winter wakes up on the morning of her 33rd birthday to Toby — Toby? — shaking her and shouting, “Get up or Cinder’s going to throw ice water over you!”

“That would probably be fun for her, actually,” Cinder says next to her ear. It’s a good thing she forbade her from sleeping with a knife under her pillow, or else instinct would have taken over in a very unfortunate way.

Winter scrubs at her eyes and manages to say, “Why are you in my house?”

“Cinder smuggled me in through the window,” Toby says.

“Oh. Lovely.”

She opens her eyes and makes a vague attempt to sit up. Cinder shoves a mug into her hand — coffee, thank god — and announces, “You’re old now.”

“We’re the same age.”

“I made the pancakes,” Toby says proudly. Winter glances over to the bedside table and discovers that there are, in fact, pancakes. She thinks she might be tearing up. Or maybe it’s just the threat of ice water.

“They look great, Toby,” she manages. (She’s known him since he was five and recently orphaned and god, she was his hero. He was so happy when he found out they were moving to the same area of Vale after the war.)

Cinder leans over to kiss her temple, taking the mug from her so she won’t spill it. “I know you hate celebrating your birthday, but —”

“Oh, god.”

“ — I thought you might want to have all your family over, so. We’re having movie night next week.”

Next week, because she hates doing stuff on the day. Next week, because Cinder knows she’ll want to see everyone and planned for her days off. Next week. “I love you,” she says, and Cinder grins brightly.

“I know.”

Cinder hasn’t eaten in years, and it’s doing things to her. This is the excuse she gives Winter, at least, the reasoning for why she has to fucking go, has to roll straight of bed and go for a ten-mile run into the forest at midnight.

“I just need to find something to eat that isn’t you,” she pants over the resulting phone call, ignoring the sound of Winter’s increasingly frantic heartbeat that she can hear from here, the dread in her voice on the other end of the line. “I’ll never forgive myself if I hurt you.”

“... I mean, I wouldn’t mind if you wanted to drink from me —”

“No,” she says, a little too harsh, a little too cold. “That will kill you.”

Winter pauses, and when her voice comes back, she sounds — well, there’s something there that scares Cinder a little bit. She’s terrifying when she wants to be. “How long has it been since you ate last?”

“... Five years.”

“Since we started dating,” Winter finishes. Somehow, that’s what does it; Cinder stops running to curl up against the side of a tree and cry and cry, and Winter sits on the other side of the line and listens and says, “I know you don’t want to hurt me, I know, it’s okay —”

“It’s not,” she says — suddenly she’s choking on her own sobs, suddenly she’s breathless and furious and so, so weak — “God, it’s not, I haven’t figured anything out and it’s my own fault and —”

“Cinder,” Winter says firmly, “come home. We’ll fix it.”

“I’m not going to —”

“I know. I’m not going to make you. But I need you here. Alright?”

There’s something hard and unyielding in her voice, and for a moment Cinder is forced to remember right, Winter loves me. “Alright,” she says. “I’m sorry I ran.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t notice you were starving.”

She allows herself a few more minutes of sobbing into the tree before she gets to her feet. Winter stays on the call and talks quietly to her until she makes it back home.
