i don't really know where i was going with this tbh
-
Cinder takes her to a burrito van in Vale.
Winter has never really done this before, so she stands awkwardly behind her and follows her lead the entire time. They wait for their orders by sitting on the pavement and watching the vendor move around inside the van. Winter doesn’t really know the social code here, so she sets her head on Cinder’s shoulder and waits to be told what to do.
They sit down in the park opposite and eat in companionable silence. Cinder keeps one hand brushing Winter’s wrist at all times. It’s — nothing like what she’s used to. She wonders just how much her childhood would have changed if she’d been allowed moments of levity like this.
“This isn’t very formal at all,” she says, smiling down at the table.
“Yeah?”
“It’s fun.”
Cinder draws her thumb over Winter’s wrist. “Yeah,” she says. “It is. Makes me feel like, at one with the general population. Like I’m just a regular person.”
“You’re going to hate the date I have planned.”
She grins. “I mean, I’m always happy to have my wife spoil me.”
“We’re not married yet,” Winter says, aware she’s blushing.
“We might as well be.”
-
True to her word, Winter takes Cinder to the best high-end restaurant she knows in the area.
“This is extreme, even for Atlesian food,” Cinder says, tapping something on the menu.
Winter doesn’t even bother looking at it. “I’ll pay for it.”
Cinder makes a complicated face. “You know I was joking about the ‘spoiling me’ thing, right? I know you’re fuckoff rich but this feels like a bit much.”
“I’m not fuckoff rich anymore,” she says idly, raising a hand to flag the waiter. “They’re just scared of my sister.”
“Well, who wouldn’t be? She’s terrifying.”
“I’m going to tell her that. It’ll make her day.”
The most annoying part is, the food is genuinely really good. Cinder winds up stealing most of Winter’s food off her plate — and Winter lets her, looking at her with that wide-eyed ‘stupidly in love’ expression she really wishes she wouldn’t break out in public.
They walk the entire way back to their apartment. Winter insists on holding her hand the entire time, says something about vindication and having generally correct opinions. Cinder is madly in love with her, so she lets her.
