Brie and Vero took the bus to a sushi restaurant. “It’ll be a nice break,” Vero said. She hadn’t said anything beyond that but Brie wondered if this could also be considered a date.
Vero had always been there for Brie. Back when Brie was Rose, a naive and weak girl, and even now, when Brie was still so weak. A weak coward who ran away.
Brie thought that they liked Vero, but they wondered if it would be unfair to Vero to tell her. It would be another thing that they put upon Vero and Brie already felt like a burden. So they kept that thought to themself because they had to be stronger before even considering confessing. They would just settle with these little moments with Vero, not-quite-dates.
When they entered the restaurant, Vero talked for them, telling a waiter that they were a party of two. They sat down at a booth with smooth, cushioned seats. Vero was across from Brie, chipper as she asked for water for the both of them.
Brie examined their surroundings. They didn’t have to order the sushi themselves. There was a revolving belt that carried plates of sushi, covered in clear domes, constantly moving past the booths at a steady pace. A little TV screen was playing music, telling the audience to insert empty sushi plates into a tray at the end of the table to play out animated scenes.
They stared at the sign that instructed people on how to take the sushi out from the revolving belt. Brie thought they got the gist of it but they felt uncertain about reaching their hand out to actually take a plate of sushi.
Vero cleared her throat and Brie glanced at her. “I’ll try first.” She reached out to a red plate with sushi on it, pinching the tip of the plate and lifting it gently. There was a small pop as the dome lifted up and Vero put the plate on table. “Pretty easy! You’ll get the hang of it real quick.”
Brie made a slight smile and nodded. It was fascinating how it worked. They never would have imagined going to a restaurant like this when they had been living in the kingdom. Seafood had been immensely expensive and rare since Brie had resided in the capital inland, far from coastal regions and the oceans.
They watched the plates float by and picked one with a little plaque saying it had salmon. With a tentative grip, they imitated Vero and pulled the plate from its spot.
It seemed like magic for a moment. But Vero had already told them that there was no magic in this world. Society had simply advanced in technology and had many progressive developments.
Brie fumbled a bit with the chopsticks but managed to grab and eat a sushi roll. They made small sound of delight as they tasted seared salmon and a dab of cream cheese with rice. Brie had come to appreciate food more ever since Vero came into their life.
They peered at her now, wondering how much they should eat. Vero waved a hand, seeming to already understand their silent question. “I just got my paycheck so don’t worry! Eat as much as you want, ok?”
Brie hesitated but nodded. “Thanks.” Vero always treated them well. Brie was determined to also take her out to a nice place to eat once they saved up a bit more money from their own job. She would say it wasn’t necessary and that it was her responsibility to take care of Brie in this new world, but Brie didn’t always want to be the one who had to be helped.
They were truly grateful to Vero for everything and they wanted to also give her anything she wanted. Brie took a bite of another roll of sushi –this one was a sweet omelet – and started a conversation. “So how was work today?”
Brie settled into this moment as Vero beamed at them and started recounting about every interesting customer she had met at her job. Brie was happy just listening to Vero. One day, they would have to go back to their old world and when that time came, they hoped that Vero would come with them too.
