Catastrophe. Oh, what an absolute catastrophe. Lilith gripped her hands tighter on the menu, feeling the smooth plastic laminating it. She glared at it as if doing so would make the contents on it change.
There was light chatter in the diner as other customers ate lunch. Lilith sat at a booth by herself, still giving the menu a death glare. She had been coming to this place for the past couple of days for lunch. Lilith was fond of the milkshakes and the pancakes and didn’t care that those weren’t items that were typically eaten for lunch.
What in the world were the owners thinking to change the menu now? Now there was a breakfast menu and a lunch menu set at designated times. The current menu consisted of hamburgers, fries, chicken nuggets, etc.
Lilith was not in the mood to eat any of those things. She wanted her cinnamon swirl pancakes that she could pour maple syrup all over and a classic vanilla milkshake. It would be very rude to just get up and leave but the longer she sat in the booth, the stronger she had the urge to break something.
So Lilith got up and left. The waiters were still tending to other customers so it probably wasn’t that big of a deal. She wondered if she should find another place to eat but she didn’t feel like it. She had wanted to go to this specific diner with specific menu items in mind but if she tried to go anywhere else, she’d likely just be disappointed.
She figured she should go back home but somehow she found herself at Brennan’s house. It wasn’t that far from her own place. She supposed it was out of habit. Lilith rang the doorbell and waited. It was summer so Brennan was likely at home. Or who knows, maybe she was stalking her crush.
Lilith shrugged to herself. She gave herself a much needed break from trying to set the two of them up. It wasn’t like there was a deadline that they had to get together by. There was a faint sound of footsteps that became louder as they got closer.
The door opened and Brennan stared at her with wide eyes. She had bedhead and was dressed in a simple shirt and shorts. Cute.
Lilith smiled, a glint in her eyes. “Aw, did I wake you from your sleep? If now’s not a good time, I can come back later.”
Brennan’s face flushed a bright red. “N-no, you can come in…” Lilith did exactly that, brushing past Brennan. She took her shoes off and placed them next to a bunch of other shoes on a shoe rack.
She immediately made herself at home– they’d known each other since they were kids, after all– and flopped onto the couch. Once Brennan sat next to her, keeping some distance between them, Lilith sighed rather theatrically and proceeded to complain about the diner. “They changed the menu with no warning whatsoever. Unbelievable.”
Lilith was really just passing the time. After a couple more words– and admiring Brennan’s endearing bedhead– she would just go back to her house and continue brainstorming other ways for Brennan to get with her crush. That girl was rather hopeless without her. She was barely making that much progress even with all of Lilith’s efforts.
“Um,” Brennan interrupted her thoughts. “I could make those for you.” She panicked under Lilith’s stare. “I-if you want! It wouldn’t be the best–”
“Sure,” Lilith replied. She smiled, one of her typical smiles that seemed to unnerve most of her classmates, but not Brennan. “Want me to help?”
Brennan gulped and jumped up. “Nope, you’re a guest! Just sit tight and I’ll have everything done in a couple of minutes. Lilith chuckled under her breath as Brennan ran to the kitchen. Brennan was too eager to please others. She was lucky that Lilith was always nearby to ward off any cruel classmates who might want to take advantage of her.
In ten minutes, Brennan came back to the living room with a tray holding a plate of steaming hot pancakes and a milkshake in a glass. Lilith’s eyes widened a bit. She figured that she’d just get a pancake or two.
She moved to the dining table and sat down as Brennan placed the tray in front of her. Brennan took a few steps back and gazed at her in anticipation with big, sparkling eyes. Like a dog wanting to be praised.
Lilith let out a little breath of air and cut a slice of the pancakes with a knife and fork. She stabbed a piece with her fork and brought it to her mouth. It was sweet, with plenty of maple syrup and some cinnamon as per her tastes.
She peered at the milkshake that even had whipped cream on it and took a sip. It was also sweet. Even if it had just been ice cream and milk thrown into a blender, she liked it.
She hummed a bit. “This is good,” she said.
Brennan brightened. “Really?”
Lilith really couldn’t stop imagining a dog wagging her tail at her. Well, she would continue to take care of this adorable classmate of hers. Even if Brennan stopped needing her, Lilith would always be close by.
“Yes, thank you.” Lilith smiled again. She pierced another chunk of pancakes with her fork and held it out to Brennan. “Come now, you should eat some of it too. You’re the one who made it.”
Brennan blushed but leaned in and took a bite. She chewed, rather happy with the results of her cooking as well. Yeah, Lilith did not want to leave anytime soon.
