Futaba could seriously be the most annoying woman alive.

Kaoruko didn't even remember what they were arguing about. It started as Kaoruko complaining that Futaba didn't visit her enough, always being too busy with university. Then, Futaba went on about how Kaoruko never made an effort to travel to Futaba. Somehow, the argument eventually turned into both of them accusing the other of eating too many sweets. Kaoruko wasn't quite sure how they got to that topic.

Futaba had left to go to the nearby store, leaving Kaoruko alone in Futaba's university dorm room. Not exactly a nice way for Futaba to treat her girlfriend. When Futaba returned, Kaoruko folded her arms and made sure she was pouting as obviously as possible. She wasn't exactly angry at Futaba anymore, but she didn't want to be the first one to apologise. Futaba sighed.

'You're still mad, huh?' Futaba said.

'Duh. I'll never forgive you.'

'Yeah, yeah. It's my fault as always. The perfect Hanayagi Kaoruko can do no wrong.'

'Exactly. Anyways, what did you buy?' Kaoruko said, standing up and walking towards Futaba, who was holding a white plastic bag. Kaoruko pushed her hands into the bag, grabbing the first thing she felt.

'Hey!' Futaba said. 'Don't ruin the surprise for yourself.'

Futaba tried to snatch the bag away but she was too slow. Kaoruko pulled a small plushie out of the bag. It was bright, with each part of its body a different vivid colour. Its ears were pink and blue, its arms were yellow and purple and its legs were green and orange. Kaoruko recognised it insantly as Usahana, the Sanrio character she used to be obsessed with when she was younger. She had so many plushies of Usahana in her childhood bedroom but stopped collecting them when she was twelve, deciding that kind of stuff was too childish for her. It was only a small plushie, a little bigger than her hand. Kaoruko cradled it with both of her hands.

'Pretty sweet find, huh?' Futaba said. 'I saw it in the convenience store near the train station. You don't see Usahana merch around that often anymore. I remember you used to be obsessed with her.'

'Yeah, used to,' Kaoruko said, trying to hide her smile. She did not want Futaba to get the satisfaction of being the one to diffuse the argument. 'I haven't cared about this shit in, like, ten years.'

'Liar. You're smiling.'

Futaba lightly poked Kaoruko on the cheek, grinning that annoyingly handsome smile that Kaoruko was so familiar with.

'Am not,' Kaoruko said.

'Not with your mouth, but with your eyes.'

Futaba leaned in and kissed Kaoruko's forehead. Her lips were dry and cracked because she hadn't been moisturising like Kaoruko told her to. Typical. Kaoruko put her hands around Futaba's waist, closing her eyes and taking in the moment. When Futaba pulled away, Kaoruko looked down at the Usahana plushie sitting in her lap.

'I suppose I can accept this apology,' Kaoruko said.

'What the hell? This isn't me apologising. I won't be the first one to do that.'

"I call my wife Bambi. She thinks it's because she's cute with big brown eyes...

But in reality it's because I want someone to shoot her mother with a hunting rifle."

Junipers are supposed to be the best starter bonsai plants, so that's what you started with. It takes time, but that's the one thing you've got no shortage of, right? It was that or drink, and your psych said that if you kept drinking, you were going to kill yourself.

Which was kind of the point, wasn't it? Make yourself not exist for a few hours at a time, until a few hours turned into forever. But that's not what you wanted. Not really.

This is better.

Pruning isn't the same as a neural override - even if they sold those on the civilian market, you could never afford one on disability pay - but it's the next best thing. Turns your body into a tool. Simple tasks, not enough that you have to really think about them, but too much to let you think about anything else.

You could do this all day, you realized a while back, and so you do.

The doorbell rings. You ignore it. You can't deal with the fucking Mormons again.

There's a row of creations along your entire wall. Junipers, mostly, but you've started branching out. Your physio says you have to keep moving, legs or no, so you take your exoskeleton out to the park and pick up acorns and pine cones. You even planted an apple seed in half a beer can just for the hell of it. It's not much of a tree yet, but it's started sprouting.

You made these. You kept them alive. (Well. Except for the dead ones. But they don't count.) You have to keep them alive. If you die, they're fucked. Can't let that happen.

The doorbell rings again.

"Oh, fuck off already!"

You throw your clippers at the wall, then go to pick them up. You weren't like this before. It's one of the things you wanted to forget about, to not exist for. You're trying. You're doing better. It still sucks.

Something in your exoskeleton is worming its way backwards, fighting the neurolink. You freeze.

[I'm going to get in there one way or another, you know.]

[Asshole.]

You're already at a run.

You smack into the door, throw it open, run into her.

Her.

She picks you up, crushing you in her arms - somehow even stronger than before - and you bury your face in her neck and utterly dissolve.

"You're here."

[Yeah. I'm here.]

"What the fuck are you doing here? Don't they need you at the front?"

She shifts her grip, sets you down, looks at you.

[You haven't heard?]

"Is this a news thing? I don't know shit about the news. Make a point of not knowing it."

Her look shifts into something sadder, incomprehensible.

[The war is over.]

You collapse. She catches you. Holds you, again, so much more gently.

[The war is over. I'm discharged. I'm out. Forever.]

There's so much you want to tell her. So much you want to ask. But there'll be time for that - it's not like you've got any shortage, not here, not now - and so you let her carry you inside, and lay you down, and hold you until you forget that anything else had ever existed.
