Winter does something she’s never even thought about before, and buys a red jacket. It’s not actually technically a part of the Specialist Operative’s uniform, but neither were the billowy sleeves she wore for about three years, so she figures Ironwood will be able to put up with it.
Dress uniform isn’t required for this event — all she has to do is go talk to Robyn Hill in a way that makes her less likely to denounce all of Atlas — but still, she wants to give a good, professional impression, and part of that is the red jacket.
“You look nice,” Robyn says when she sees her, “what’s that about?”
Winter tugs on the lapels. “This?”
“Yeah.” Realisation dawns on her, and her eyes light up. “Don’t tell me you’re seeing someone?”
“Could be,” Winter shrugs. “Should we get on with it?”
-
Harbouring a fugitive in her quarters on the Atlas military compound may not have been Winter’s smartest move, but it’s worth it to see the way Cinder’s eyes light up when she comes home.
She slinks off the couch the moment the door opens and runs her hands along the front of the jacket. Winter resigns herself to using it as lingerie.
“Red suits you,” she says.
“I — wanted everyone to know I’m yours.”
“Without being too obvious,” Cinder grins, eyebrows raising. “Well, it certainly looks good. What did Robyn think?”
“She picked up on it instantly.”
“And?”
“Well, she has no idea who you are. Red is the signature colour of hundreds of Atlesian huntresses,” Winter says, struggling to kick off her shoes. Her hands are otherwise occupied, linked around the small of Cinder’s back.
Cinder leans up to her ear and purrs, “Good.”
