Kay doesn't mean to offend, Guinevere knows, but it's not as if that makes the act of being served a squirrel any less uncomfortable.

"Get it while it's piping hot!" the knight says before tearing into his own squirrel. Their journey took a bit longer than expected, so foraging is a necessity. Still, Guinevere would've contented herself with a few mushrooms if it meant not having to deal with this.

She's working herself up to taking a polite few nibbles by the time Kay is finished. What an accursedly hungry man. And it seems he's in an observant mood today, for he asks "Something wrong? You can't fill your stomach on the scent, you know."

"I am perfectly fine," Guinevere tells him. He's a part of the inner circle, so at least she doesn't have to pretend to smile around him. "I only find that I don't have much appetite at the moment."

Kay looks down at the meal, then up at her, then back down again. "Someone on your mind, eh?"

Guinevere swallows. "You don't find it... awkward?"

"Not really," Kay shrugs. "I asked Lancelot about it once. She says squirrels don't quite think the same. Most of them don't like the idea of getting eaten, but they still expect it, you know?"

"I see."

Guinevere lifts the squirrel to her mouth and takes a bite. The smoky flavor seeps down her throat, and she buries certain thoughts deep within herself.

On the eighty-sixth day of the siege, they slaughter Lord Fudreim's dogs.

They had subsisted on vermin so far, but now there are no rats to be found. Better a swift death, the Lord says, than the agony of starvation. That burden is reserved for soldiers.

He isn't present when it happens. You don't blame him.

You're given one carcass as your company's share. It will be the first meat in your rations in more than a month. It will be the last meat in your rations until the castle falls or the siege is lifted.

Deshavi is your best butcher, so the task falls to her. She expertly strips the skin from the meat, strips the meat from the bones. The meat, such as it is, you’ll salt and spread across as many meals as you can.

What you can’t preserve, you’ll eat today.

Deshavi cracks the bones and places them in a cauldron, along with the grain that would have been today’s rations. It’s a thin soup - barely a broth, really - but when you sit down to eat it, it’s incomparable.

Deshavi makes sure you’re given the thickest bone. Normally, you’d refuse, but today you lack the willpower. There’s precious little meat left on it - Deshavi is a good butcher - but what there is, you find, and you eat. You scrape the gristle from the joint. You suck the marrow from the center.

“You know,” Deshavi says, “it’s easy to be a good cook for starving soldiers. Maybe we should get besieged more often.”

You can’t help yourself. You laugh.

You laugh, and you laugh, and you retreat to your quarters before they can see your tears.

You've all but forgotten the pleasures of mortal cuisine, until one day, for the first time in almost a millennium, someone drops a meal in the fire and whispers your name

“Ah... I was hoping I'd get to see you again,” Mizuki says pleasantly. “Hello, Other Layla.”

Other Layla slowly sets her chopsticks down, a faint frown creasing her brow.

“How did you know...?”

“You ate the vegetable tempura first,” Mizuki points out, gesturing with her own chopsticks at the spread of Inazuman food. “Layla tends to impulsively go for any sweets first, since sugar gives her a short term boost in energy, but you're always conscious about her health and overall well-being. You put her long term needs ahead of all else. Hence: vegetables.”

Guilty as charged. Other Layla sighs, a wry smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.

“She doesn't take very good care of herself, does she?”

“She can rely on you, so she doesn't have to,” Mizuki replies. Her thin tail curls subconsciously around her thigh as she leans closer. “What I'm curious about is what you like. What would you eat first, if you weren't doing it for her?”

Other Layla shifts uncomfortably, eyes darting over their surroundings. They're alone in Mizuki's office, the same place they last met. The lingering spice of burnt incense hangs thick in the air, tickling her nose. A dream-eating session, then. She only fronts when Layla is unconscious, after all, and it's been a long string of sleepless nights leading up to this. It's important for Layla to get the youkai treatments she needs, but...

“I like everything she likes,” Other Layla declares in lieu of answering. “I am just a fragment of her personality that broke away on accident, that's all.”

“Is that so?” Mizuki sounds more thoughtful than doubtful, but there's an intensity to her preternatural gaze that pierces Other Layla through. “I have a different theory than you. I think you are a separate but equal personality to hers, but you've repressed your own needs to the point of denying yourself personhood – even a name. I want to get to know you.”

Other Layla scoffs. “That's ridiculous,” she says, returning her attention to the collection of white takeout boxes. “If I'm not finishing her homework, organizing her research notes, or walking her home from wherever she collapses, I'm not needed. You're the only one with the power to drag me out of her mind by force.”

“Hardly,” Mizuki says with a soft laugh. “Baku can trawl through your dreams and memories, tanuki can create illusion worlds your mind will accept as reality, kitsune can transfer your consciousness into inanimate objects – you've only scratched the surface of what us youkai can do to you. To me, you're like a fledgling tsukumogami, emerging from nonexistence to take your first shaky steps toward self-awareness. You will find that youkai are a little more open-minded than humans when it comes to what constitutes a self.”

Other Layla stares in fascination at Mizuki. Her heart is pounding so loudly she's sure Mizuki can hear it.

“I...” She starts quietly, then stops. “I need to think about this. Do you...”

“We'll see each other again soon,” Mizuki promises, touching the back of Other Layla's hand in reassurance. “I'm looking forward to it.”
